Broadcast Internships

WGLT FM is a 25,000 watt listener supported radio station located in Normal, Illinois. The GLT broadcast signal covers much of central Illinois, west to Peoria, north to Pontiac, east to Champaign, and south to Springfield, covering a total population area of over 400,000. Formats include National Public Radio news, award winning local news and the most jazz and blues between Chicago and St. Louis. GLT is staffed by broadcast, development and management professionals.

GLT receives funding from several sources: 47% from listeners and businesses, 23% from state and federal grants, and 30% from Illinois State University.

Intern activities can include:

Writing

  • Learn to write effective on-air copy to promote programs and station events

Production

  • Develop familiarity with digital editing software and on-air audio delivery software
  • Responsible for weekly production of audio promos
  • Assist in production related to on-air fund drives

On-Air Experience

  • Learn how to prepare for on-air shift
  • Develop on-air skills with regular shift
  • Learn to “voice track” automated shift

Administration

  • Track weekly on-air song play and revise station charts weekly
  • Report weekly charts to trade organizations
  • Develop basic understanding of music library and music database management
