Jazz

  • The Aduki Duo play Wednesday nights from 6 to 8:30 at Reality Bites in downtown Bloomington. 309-828-1300
  • The Jimmy Binkley Trio spends Saturdays from 7 to 10 PM at Sky Harbor in Peoria.
  • The Knox College Cherry Street Combo is at McGillicuddy's Restaurant and Bar in Peoria on Thursdays from 8 PM to midnight
  • Eddie and Judy Howard play at Jim's Steakhouse in downtown Peoria Tuesdays from 7:30 PM to 1 AM.
  • The Miller Boys are at The Rhythm Kitchen in Peoria on Wednesday nights from 6 to 9 PM.  309-676-9668
  • Martini's in Peoria welcome Paul Weddle every Wednesday from 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM.  309-655-5003
  • Larry Harms is a Basta O'Neill's in Washington each Thursday from 6 to 9 PM.  309-682-9393
  • It's Gypsy Jazz Night every Wednesday at the Red Barn in Peoria. John Miller and the Romaniacs play beginning at 9:30 PM.
  • The Central Illinois Jazz Society is holding a series of concerts at the Landmark Recreation Center in Peoria (3225 N. Dries Lane). the Doug Lady Quartet is March 21; the Bradley Jazz Ensemble performs on April 18, and on May 16 it's Carl Anderson and his New Orleans Band. Show time is 6 PM.
  • Inktrail plays at Swinger's Grille in Normal on March 12 from 8 to 11 PM.
  • Fat Jack's in downtown Bloomington has live jazz on the first Wednesday of every month from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. Coming up on April 7 it's the Brian Choban Quintet; May 5, Denise La Grassa. Also, the Prairieland Dixie Band is performing on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 7 to 10 PM.
  • Lexicon performs at the Blueline Nightclub in Bloomington on Friday, March 12 from 7 to 10 PM. On the 19th it's Lexicon and VonFrickle from 10 PM to closing.
  • The Normal Community West High School Passport to Jazz is Friday, March 12 starting at 6 PM. A variety of Unit 5 jazz bands will perform.
  • Avenue 9 in Bloomington welcomes Soft Spoken on Saturday, March 13 at 8 PM. On the 20th it's Kevin Hart and the Vibe Tribe from 8 to 11 PM. And on March 27 you can see Wave with Paul Weddle starting at 8 PM. Active Ingredient performs on April 3 at 8 PM. Soft Spoken takes the stage on April 10 at 8. Preston Jackson and Friends perform at 8 PM on April 17. Lexicon performs on Saturday, April 24 from 8 to 11 PM.
  • The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts presents the big band revue, In the Mood, Friday, March 19, 2010 at 7:30 PM.
  • Trumpeter Marvin Stamm is the guest artist at the annual ISU Jazz Festival on March 19 & 20 on the ISU campus. Stamm performs at 8 PM both nights with the ISU Jazz Ensembles in the Center for the performing Arts.
  • Frank Trompeter performs at Marley's Pub in Springfield on Friday, March 19 and March 26 at 6 PM. On March 20 at 6:30 PM he's at Caitie Girl's Restaurant and on March 25 he's at Norb Andy's Tabarin at 8 PM, and on the 27th he's performing there at 9 PM.
  • The IWU Jazz Ensemble is holding a senior night concert on Friday, March 26 at 7:30 PM in Westbrook Auditorium on the IWU campus in Bloomington.
  • Lexicon and Strange Arrangement play at the Illinois Brewing Company in Bloomington on Friday, April 16 from 10 PM to closing.
  • Preston Jackson and Friends perform at the Contemporary Art Center in Peoria on Friday, March 19 & April 16 at 5:30 PM. Stephanie Aaron performs on April 2 and John Miller and the Romaniacs take the stage on April 30 at 5:30 PM.

Blues

  • Shenanigan's in Peoria is hosting an open blues jam on Sundays, from 4 to 8 PM. 
  • The Treehouse Lounge in Bloomington features blues acts every 3rd Friday of the month from 7 to 10 PM.
  • Hip Pocket performs at the Contemporary Art Center in Peoria on Friday, March 12 at 5:30 PM. Rob Williams and the Soggy Bottom Blues Band play on March 26 and you can catch Southside Cindy and the Sliptones on April 2.
  • Chicken Shack performs at the Bloomington VFW on Saturday, March 20 from 8 PM to midnight and on April 2 the band is at Winner's Lounge in Bloomington from 8 to midnight.
  • The Alamo in Springfield welcomes Shawn Kellerman on March 15 at 8:30 PM. On the 22nd it's Big Jeff Chapman; March 29 - Kilborn Alley CD release party; April 5, Motor City Josh; April 12 perry Weber and the Devilles; April 19 - Too SLim and the Taildraggers; April 26 - Rockin' Jake.
  • The Colewell Playhouse in Urbana welcomes Mavis Staples, Booker T and JJ Grey on March 30, 2010 at 7:30 PM.

Acoustic, Folk, Americana, Celtic, etc.

  • The McLean County Museum of History in downtown Bloomington hosts a bluegrass music jam every 4th Sunday of the month from 1 to 4:30 PM.
  • The Blue Moon Coffee House features a wide variety of artists in concert in 2010: John Gorka, March 27; Patty Larkin, April 10; Carrie Newcomer, April 24; The Willy Porter Band, May 22. Doors open at 7:30; show begins at 8PM. The shows are in the Main Lounge of the IWU Memorial Center in Bloomington. 309-556-3815
  • Danu plays at the Tryon Festival Theatre at the Krannert Center in Urbana on Tuesday, march 16 at 7:30 PM.
  • Berchtold and Stear play at the Rhythm Kitchen in Peoria on March 20 from 8 - 11 PM.
  • The Princeton Coffeehouse presents a series of singer/songwriter concerts at Open Prairie UCC in Princeton: March 27 Curtis & Loretta; April 24, Bill Morrissey; May 22, Jack Hardy. Doors open at 7 PM with the music beginning at 7:30.
  • The Forest Park Nature Center in Peoria Heights presents Songs From the Woods, a free concert series featuring: Edith Barnard, Wes Sedrel & Friends, March 13; Mike Anderson, April 10; Dana and Susan Robinson, May 8.
  • Willie Nelson and Family perform Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 8 PM in the Peoria Civic Center Theatre.
  • Singer/singwriter Lynn O'Brien and Margaret O'Brien play at Theatrescool in downtown Bloomington on Friday,March 19th from 7 to 9 PM. Coming up Saturday, April 3rd, Lynn has a CD release party at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium in Champaign (how cool is that!). The concert begins at 3 PM.

Theatre

  • The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts presents Seussical, Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 3 PM. On Sunday, April 25 at 3 PM it's The Wizard of Oz.
  • Community Players presents the Woody Allen comedy, Play it Again , Sam running March 5 - 20 at the theatre on Robinhood Lane in Bloomington. And on March 25 - 27 it's the musical revue Side by Side by Sondheim, running at 7:30 PM.
  • The Illinois State University School of Theatre presents Eugene Ionesco's absurdist play, Rhinoceros, running march 24 - 28 in Westoff Theatre on the ISU campus.
  • Prairie Fire Theatre presents the premier production of the opera, Fertile Ground. There's a free workshop performance on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 3:30 PM in Presser Hall on the IWU campus in Bloomington. The show opens on March 28th and runs thru April 2, 2010, again in Presser Hall. This is for mature audiences.

 

Art Exhibits

  • The University Gallery at ISU in Normal is showing the work of new York artist Shinique Smith Feb. 16 - March 28. Admission is free.
  • Milner Library at Illinois State University is showing a poster exhibit entitled "Thought on Democracy," which reinterprets Norman Rockwell's "Four Freedoms" posters. The show is up Feb. 12 - May 7 on the main floor of the library.
  • The McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington is showing new paintings by Hua Nian in the Armstrong Gallery Feb. 19 - April 10. Also, the 83rd Annual McLean County Amateur Art Competition-Exhibition is up in the Brandt Gallery through April 24.
  • The Merwin Gallery at IWU in Bloomington presents The Language of Memory, a collection of prints by artist April Katz. The show is currently up and runs through April 1.

Miscellaneous: Readings, Comedy, Music, etc.

  • The Illinois Symphony Orchestra presents the world premier of Judith Shatin's Jefferson - In His Own Words, March 12th at 8 PM in the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts. Newsman Bill Kurtis will narrate the work.
  • The 3rd Annual ISU School of Music New Music Festival is March 22 - 25 and features a variety of of concerts in Kemp Recital Hall on the ISU campus in Normal.
  • It's Re:Verse Poetry Open Mic Night at TheatresCool in downtown Bloomington on Tuesday, March 16 beginning at 7 PM. There's also another one coming up on April 13. On March 20, it's live music from Cul De Sac Kids and Oh Alchemy lite at 8 PM.
  • The Faculty Chamber Music Concert at IWU is Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 PM in Westbrook Auditorium in Bloomington.
  • The Flying Karamazov Brothers present their daredevil juggling show 4Play in the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, April 24 at 7:30 PM.

Movies

  • The historic Normal Theatre is showing a variety of classic, independent and foreign films this March. See a complete list of movies. Show times are at 7 PM.   309-454-9720.

  • The Bloomington Public Library is showing Bend it Like Beckham on Saturday, March 20 at 1:30 PM and The Cup on March 27 at 1:30. On March 30 it's God Grew Tired of Us: The Lost Boys of Sudan at 6 PM.. The film is followed by a presentation given by two of the Lost Boys. The films are free and are being show in the library's Community Room.
