The Baby Fold in Normal is closing the gap in a budget deficit created by reductions in funding from the state. The organization provides adoption and placement services for infants and has an annual operating deficit of $1.9 million this year.
Donations and special event fundraisers help reduce that deficit. The Festival of Trees held last month raised $203,000 toward operating costs, which is about $32,000 under their goal. However, Dianne Schultz, CEO of The Baby Fold, says some of their other goals were met.
People from the Twin Cities and surrounding areas took part in the Festival of Trees to donate to the cause. This year's "Wrapped in Joy" event featured an auction for decorated trees, and other holiday items, as well as a trivia night. Schultz says the event helps pay for the services The Baby Fold offers to the community.
This is the 22nd year for the annual event. Schultz says people have made it a tradition.
Schultz says, as a faith-based organization, they wanted to have a way for people to celebrate Christmas. This year's fundraiser sold 537 items despite the snow and ice that caused lower attendance. Next year's theme will be "A Gift of Love" and will take place the weekend before Thanksgiving.
