False Memories Common

Police reliance on eye witness accounts should be balanced against evidence of the prevalence of  false memories. Illinois State University Psychology professor Dawn McBride is speaking about false memories as part of the university's Main Street College events at the Alumni Center Monday evening at 7. McBride says memories are often modified as time goes on because a person hears a different version of events, or gets a new idea they incorporate into their memories. She says the nature of remembering is not always logical.

McBride says she will instill false memories in the minds of those who attend the Monday event, which begins at 7. She says researchers are still trying to figure out how to differentiate between 'true' and 'false' memories. One clue, she says, is false memories tend to be light on imagery and sound.
