President Donald Trump arrives for a phone call with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in the Oval Office of the White House on Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, in Washington.

Illinois Farm Bureau President Richard Guebert on Monday applauded the preliminary trade deal the U.S. has reached with Mexico.

Guebert said the deal to modernize NAFTA will provide economic stability and keep Mexican markets tariff-free for $40 billion worth of U.S. agricultural exports.

“We’re also pleased to see the updated agreement addresses biotechnology and trade-distorting policies,” Guebert said. “At a time of declining prices and net farm income, Illinois farmers are gratified to see progress toward expanding our already strong, complimentary trade relationship with Mexico and look forward to Congress moving swiftly to ratify the agreement.”

The Illinois Farm Bureau also asked the Trump administration to continue negotiations with Canada so that trading relationship might be restored.

The Trump administration has turned up the pressure on Canada, saying it would place automotive tariffs on Canadian imports if Canada rejects the changes.
