Koos Contemplating Fourth Campaign For Town Mayor

Ralph Weisheit

Town of Normal Mayor Chris Koos is considering another run for Mayor.

During Sound Ideas Koos told GLT's Mike McCurdy he'd make a decision in "the next two to three weeks."

"I've thought about some things that have happened in the community, I still feel good about how the Town of Normal is progressing, I think we have a great council a very collaborative group of people," said Koos. "So we'll see."

While Koos won't reveal his plans, the fact that he's thinking about another campaign for Mayor is different than his answer when asked in April of 2013 about whether this term would be his last.

"It pretty much is, yeah," said Koos, following the election more than 3 years ago. "I think you need new blood in a race. I will have served 16 years, council and Mayor and I'm hoping that there are new and invigorated people following behind me who want to take on the charge of the community."

Koos said "of course there are" new and invigorated people who could run for Mayor and when asked if he'd heard of interest from others about running for Mayor or if he had interest in seeing someone run for Mayor, other than himself, Koos was cagey, answering only "yes."

"If I decide, there are a lot things happening in the community," said Koos. "We're on the cusp of a high speed rail system coming on line. I'd like to see what's going to happen with Bloomington-Normal Advantage, obviously Uptown 2.0, a new library, things like that. There's always something on the horizon that's happening. The government, the Town of Normal and the council are a very energized group of people and really get things done.

As it concerns a decision to run, Koos said "I think I owe it as we come up on the petition process."

Nominating petitions for non-partisan municipal offices can begin circulating on August 30. The filing period for the petitions is November 21-28. The primary, if needed based on the number of candidates, is February 24, 2017. The general election is set for early April, 2017.
