Two potential draft Welcoming City ordinances are now available for the city of Bloomington. Mayor Tari Renner said he sees no problem with having both of them go to the City Council.
"If we ultimately have an amended version that our police chief and legal counsel think is reasonable, that we present too, and say you asked us to present something. This is one. Here is another. What is the council's pleasure?" said Renner.
Five aldermen last week asked to remove one version from the council agenda because they said it did nothing more than state law already does. That was before emails were disclosed showing a close working relationship between Bloomington Police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Renner said in December that the council asked staff to create a draft.
"We at least need to present what the staff report was in public. Because you can't have five aldermen going behind the scenes and try to stop something that you have agreed to in public," said Renner.
He said there is nothing to prevent council members from voting no.
