City of Bloomington

Bloomington’s Miller Park Zoo is welcoming two new members to its animal collection.

Kuantan and Ping are the additions to the primate collection. They are male Francois Langurs who share the same biological father. Kuantan will be 10 years old on Aug. 18, while Ping will turn 12 on Aug. 16, according to a news release from the zoo.

Francois Langurs are a type of Old World Monkey. They have black silky hair on their bodies with small tufts of white and grey on their faces. They grow to be 2 feet tall with a tail length of 33 inches, weighing approximately 13-15 pounds. Francois Langurs live in Southeast Asia and are an endangered species due to hunting and loss of habitat.

The Francois Langur is known to have a diet composed of only specific plant species and fruit. They live in cliffs and caves of tropical and subtropical habitats and are most active during the day. They also live in matriarchal groups of four to 27, and spend their time foraging, resting, and grooming.

The Miller Park Zoo primate collection now consists of four different groups: Prosimian or Primitive Primates, New World Primates, Apes, and now Old World Monkeys.
