Normal Council To Consider Marijuana Ordinance, MetroNet Agreement

The Normal Town Council will be asked to vote on changing the town's ordinance on cannabis possession to align with a state law passed last month.

The state law imposes a fine, with no jail time, for people who carry up to 10 grams of pot, up from 2.5 grams. Currently, Normal charges a fine of $350 to $1000 for possession of up to 2.5 grams, but the proposal raises that to 10 grams. The proposed ordinance also eliminates fines for people who possess marijuana or marijuana paraphernalia for medical use.

Council members will consider a franchise agreement for fiber optic television, internet and phone service with MetroNet. The 10-year contract requires the provider to pay up to five percent of its gross revenue from the services back to the Town of Normal and requires them to maintain customer service standards and insurance.

If approved, the town's other cable provider, Comcast, will be able to renegotiate their agreement with Normal. Metronet began working on bringing the services to Bloomington earlier this year after an agreement was reached with the city in April.
