Police Arrest Father And Son In ISU Orientation Rape Case

Illinois State University

A father and son are accused of drugging a prospective ISU student and sexually assaulting her in a university dormitory.

It allegedly happened during the orientation program called Preview. ISU Chief of Staff Jay Groves said the situation is unprecedented in the half century of successful summer offerings.

"What happened was not a case of mischief or anything else. It is a case of extreme adult criminal behavior," said Groves.

Nineteen year old Shawn Childs, Junior is accused of Sexual Assault. His father Shawn Childs, Senior also faces controlled substance charges for allegedly placing ecstasy in the victim's soda at Hewett Hall.

Groves said parents and students stay on separate floors during Preview.

"But, it is the case that when people are hellbent on doing some criminal activity it can happen," said Groves.

Childs Sr. allegedly bought alcohol for other students as well before he allegedly drugged the soda given to the girl.

"We're sad that it happened but gratified the victim reported it quickly. The police investigated it quickly, and made an arrest," said Groves.

Police say they arrested both men as they boarded a train to return to Chicago and the father had additional tabs of ecstasy in his pocket.
