Officials studying safety in Illinois schools say local authorities should adopt sound existing guidelines for securing the schoolhouse, build trust in students to come forward with their suspicions, and consult regularly with local police. The School Security and Standards Task Force has issued an interim report to the General Assembly which members say is meant to offer schools a range of the best options for keeping their pupils safe in the classroom. The task force, put together after the 2012 Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut, will issue a final report in July. Member Carol Sente, a Democratic state representative from Vernon Hills, says the group is offering suggestions for schools to tailor to their particular localities.
