Sangamon County State's Attorney John Milhiser.

The Sangamon County state's attorney is leaving that job and is expected to become the area's interim chief federal prosecutor.

Sangamon County State's Attorney John Milhiser is resigning effective Tuesday from the position he's held since 2010. President Donald Trump nominated the Republican in August to become the U.S. attorney for the 46-county central district of Illinois.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reports Milhiser is awaiting a U.S. Senate confirmation vote, but is expected to be appointed as the interim U.S. attorney. He would replace John Childress, who resigned from that interim position this week.

The district hasn't had a permanent U.S. attorney since the December 2016 retirement of Jim Lewis, who led the office for 6-1/2 years during the Obama administration.

The Central District of Illinois is based in Springfield and covers 46 counties. McLean County is served by the branch office in Peoria.
