An Illinois judge has been reprimanded for using his position to solicit paid speaking engagements from law enforcement groups, medical societies and hospitals.
The Illinois Courts Commission said Monday it determined 4th District Appellate Judge Robert Steigmann of Urbana exploited his office and had improper financial dealings with people likely to come before his court.
Steigmann acknowledged he used judicial letterhead to offer his "Legal Tips for Police Officers" speech to law enforcement groups for $1,250 plus expenses. He gave the speech at least 15 times. He also sent letters to physician groups advertising a speech about medical malpractice. He gave at least nine presentations, usually for an $800 speaking fee.
Steigmann testified the speeches were his way of sharing his love of the law. He denied he was biased toward the groups that paid him.
