Back Alley Players Beyond The Blues (B.O.N.E. Entertainment)
A guitarist who doubles on the mandolin. A drummer who cut his teeth on hip-hop. A vocalist who sounds as if he's the nephew of Barry White. If you're thinking this could be the recipe for a new blues sound, you're right. Except on Beyond The Blues, The Back Alley Players don't melt those sounds into a new blues brew so much as they deliver one of the tastiest and schizophrenic soul and country blues release since, well, ever.
Mavis Staples Live - Hope @ the Hideout (Anti-)
Mavis Staples sings gospel songs and spirituals from the 1960's civil rights movement to an adoring Chicago crowd. Rick Holmstrom seems to be channeling the spirit of Mavis' father "Pops" on guitar.
James "Super Chikan" Jonson Chikadelic(Bluestown)
Johnson grew up listening to (and befriending) John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson & Lightnin' Hopkins. He was also a fan of old country music from Roy Acuf & Gene Autrey.
Live In San Antonio (Armadillo)
Bridges rips through 15 spirited originals recorded at Chango's Havana Club in San Antonio.
Nick Moss Privileged (Blue Bella)
Musically, Privileged owes as much, if not more, to Hendrix & Zeppelin and as it does to Muddy or Wolf. For much of the past decade, Moss has, at least outwardly, accepted the weight of carrying on that tradition with a number of solid traditional blues releases that would make former mentors Jimmy Dawkins & Jimmy Rogers proud. On Privileged, Moss has freed himself from the limitations that come with those expectations to deliver a blues/rock blast of working class sentiment that expresses both lyrically and musically the anger and unease permeating America in 2010.
Samuel James For Rosa Maeve and Noreen (Northern Blues)
James is an young singer/songwriter/guitarist who plays guitar like Robert Johnson and writes lyrics that range from personal to humorous to biting social commentary. And on the opening track Bigger, Blacker Ben he accomplishes all three. Still in his 20's, James possesses a confidence equal to his talent. Keep on eye on this talented bluesman.
Kilborn Alley Blues Band Better Off Now (Blue Bella)
The darling of Champaign-Urbana, The Kilborn Alley Blues Band has been wowing fans since they exploded on the national blues scene in the middle of the last decade. Lead singer Andrew Duncanson and since departed harp man Joe Asselin lead the band through a number of hard Chicago style shuffles and good 'ol soul music that is sure to be nominated for a number of blues awards.
Arthur Adams Stomp The Floor (Delta Groove)
Adams is an serious guitarist with the one of the sweetest voices in blues.
Zora Young The French Connection
(Delmark)This CD was recorded in France, Young's second home. The French Connection is equal parts acoustic, electric and Euro Groove.
