Woody Herman Complete 1948-1950 Capitol Sessions (Definitive Records)Any compilation that includes Woody’s wonderful Early Autumn has to be a winner. This 2 CD set features a very young Stan Getz in a solo on the best of all songs for fall, but Getz is just one cog in Woody’s amazing Second Herd, a band whose roster reads like a jazz who’s who: Shorty Rogers, Conte Candoli, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Jimmy Giuffre, Serge Chaloff, Terry Gibbs, Chubby Jackson--well, you get the idea. Take a listen to an excerpt of "Early Autum" by Woody Herman.
Paul Anka Rock Swings (Verve) Trust me on this--this is a swinging album that just sounds great. Anka has been signing his own songs (remember Diana from 1958?) longer than I have been on the radio and it’s a pretty big step for him to tackle songs written by the likes of Kurt Cobain, Jon Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton and Lionel Richie. But he pulls it off, thanks in part to wonderful big arrangements by Randy Kerber, Patrick Williams and John Clayton. Crank up the volume and discover that rock swings. Who knew? Take a listen to an excerpt of Anka's version of Lionel Richie's hit, "Hello."
