A central Illinois conservation group has acquired one of the few remaining remnants of Hill Prairie habitat in Illinois. It's called the "devil’s backbone," an old-time name for the jagged geography of the 55 acres near the Mackinaw River in Woodford County.

Attorney and Lincoln historian Guy Fraker settled in Bloomington in 1962. He's been a key figure in documenting and promoting Lincoln's legal career in central Illinois, and fell into an avocation in land conservation by accident. Tree Corps looks beyond short-term, feel-good projects. Instead, it works to build an army of community volunteers, and help them plant 100,000 trees across McLean County within a decade. That’s being tackled as 10,000 trees a year, for at least 10 years in a row.
