Researchers In India Name Snake After 'Harry Potter' Character

(SOUNDBITE OF JOHN WILLIAMS' "HEDWIG'S THEME")

DAVID GREENE, HOST:

Good morning. I'm David Greene. One more point for House Slytherin. Researchers in India have named a new species of green pit viper after Salazar Slytherin, co-founder of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In the "Harry Potter" books, Slytherin was known for his ability to talk to snakes. In the real world, Trimeresurus salazar males will be known for the orange-reddish stripe on the side of their heads. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
