Man found shot to death outside hotel in Normal

Updated: September 19, 2022 at 1:13 PM CDT
The McLean County Coroner's Office has indicated the shooting was a suicide.

Police in Normal said a 29-year-old man was shot in the parking lot of the Candlewood Suites motel on Susan Drive overnight Sunday morning.

The call came in about 3:40 a.m. The man was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officers said they view this as an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the public. The McLean County Coroner's office on Monday indicated the shooting was a suicide.

Coroner Kathy Yoder said the man was from Rantoul. He was pronounced dead at 4:43 a.m. Sunday at OSF St. Joseph Hospital. In a joint news release with the Normal Police Department, Yoder said autopsy results indicate the man died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Normal PD said the gunshot was self inflicted.

Toxicology tests are pending.

Yoder said the incident remains under investigation by the Normal Police Department and the McLean County Coroner’s Office.
