Like ironweed, coneflowers and prairie blazing star, Patrick Murphy is a native of Illinois. In fact, he grew up in the Twin Cities, learning gardening – what to do and what not to do – by watching his mother working in her garden.
After graduating from Normal Community High School, Murphy served in the Army infantry for eight years before returning to the Twin Cities to study horticulture at Illinois State University. He now works for his alma mater as the curator of The Fell Arboretum, a living laboratory for students and community on the Illinois State University campus.
Patrick is fascinated by trees, collects antique tools and believes the best place to learn from your mistakes is in the garden.
