All-clear At ISU; 4th Floor Schroeder Reopened

November 20  Illinois State University Environmental Health and Safety opened the package and discovered documents, according to ISU spokesperson Eric Jome. He says the suspicion regarding the parcel was based on a misunderstanding about the origin and intent of the package.

November 19, 7:38 PM The package has been turned over to ISU's Environmental Health and Safety Office. Jome says staff with office will open the package in a controlled environment tomorrow. Jome says he doesn't know which professor received the package or where it originated.

6:45 PM Authorities completed testing. No hazardous materials found. There is no threat to campus. 4th floor of Schroeder Hall open and University St. to reopen soon.  

5:59 PM University St. remains closed to allow emergency vehicle access. Testing continues. 4th Floor Schroeder remains closed.

6:12 PM Jome tells WGLT's Mike McCurdy that the Bloomington Fire Department hazmat team was swabbing the package for hazardous materials. Classes continued on other floors of Schroeder Hall.

Schroeder Hall is home to the Department of Criminal Justice Sciences, the Department of History, the Department of Sociology/Anthropology, and the Department of Politics and Government. The building contains 49 classrooms and office space for 89 faculty members.

5:26 PM  ISU Spokesperson Eric Jome says a professor received a package via the U. S. Postal Service that made the professor uneasy.  Jome described the package as "smallish."  Jome did not identify the professor and did not know the origin of the package.  Despite recent attacks in Paris, Jome says the ISU response is typical.

Bloomington Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team is on the scene to test the package.

4:55 PM Police and security officials at Illinois State University are handling what they call at Hazardous Materials alert. At 4:41 Thursday afternoon, what officials call a suspicious package was being investigated on the fourth floor of Schroeder Hall on campus. As a precaution, the Normal Fire Department order  the floor evacuated.

4:41 PM ISU issues alert: "Investigation of Suspicious Package on 4th floor Schroeder Hall. Evacuate 4th floor immediately."
