About two thousand five hundred students in District 87 schools will be getting city public library cards.

Bloomington Library Director Jeanne Hamilton said sixty five percent of the student body already had cards.

She said libraries are increasingly reaching out to schools for such partnerships.

"We're starting to see a little bit more of that around the state. But, we are a little bit unique because all of the students in District 87 are covered in our service area," said Hamilton.

Hamilton said school district media staff will teach children about the databases and on line resources the public library provides as part of the outreach effort.

Hamilton said expanding the reach of the library's education and literacy effort will allow students to use some resources District 87 does not have.

"We have on line databases I know that the teachers are excited about; e-book resources so students can check out an e-book maybe if they are reading it in an english class. We also have some financial databases that might be helpful," said Hamilton.

Hamilton says parents could opt out of the new card, but only a few did so.
