Bloomington Election Commission Tosses First Renner Ballot Challenge

The Bloomington Election Commission has dismissed one of the petition challenges to Mayor Tari Renner's candidacy.

The commission did toss out some of the signatures Kevin Gerrard had questioned, but not nearly enough to reduce the number of valid signatures below the legal threshold to remain on the ballot.

Speaking earlier this week on GLT's Sound Ideas, Renner predicted the outcome saying it was a frivolous complaint.

"What I find sad is that we have a couple of people who want to disfranchise their fellow citizens, hundreds of their fellow citizens. You not only have the right to vote as a voter, you have the right to sign petitions to put people on the ballot so you have choices when you vote," said Renner.

The Elections Board has also dismissed the ballot challenge to Bloomington Mayoral Candidate Diana Hauman for lack of evidence. Another challenge to city council candidate Jeffrey Fox was dismissed when he withdrew his candidacy.

A second complaint against Renner's petitions and challenges to Alderman Joni Painter's candidacy and City Council candidate J. Ballmer's ballot position will resume Monday.
