Bloomington Election Heating Up

Bloomington Alderman Kevin Lower officially announced his bid for mayor at an event at Illinois Wesleyan University this morning. During his speech, Lower said Bloomington can improve.

"I believe that my constituency, as well as most folks across town, know that Bloomington deserves better."

Lower has represented Ward 1 since 2013 and has been a consistent opponent of current mayor Tari Renner's agenda. Lower said he wants the city to focus on public safety, solid waste, street repair, sewer repair and water.

"We have a mayor, currently, who is focused on trying to attract someone to build a hotel downtown, and many other less fundamental needs," he said.

Lower also said he wants to eliminate unneeded spending and "bring the city back in line and try to keep our costs down to the citizen [and] city."

Mayor Tari Renner and Ward 8 Alderman Diana Hauman are also running for the seat. Radio host Ian Bayne is passing petitions for the race, but will not make a final decision until November.

In the race for Ward 1 Alderman, former Liquor Commission member Sue Feldkamp announced her candidacy today. Renner removed her and another member from the board effective today. Downtown business owner Jamie Mathy began his campaign for the seat in August. No other candidates are running for Ward 1 at this time.
