One woman suffered smoke inhalation injuries during a late-night blaze on Bloomington's northwest side.

Firefighters were called to a duplex at 64 Vermont Street at 11:34 P.M. Thursday, to find the woman outside the home. A male resident carried the woman to safety after he realized she was in the smoke-filled basement, where Bloomington fire officials believe the fire originated. They credit a smoke alarm with alerting the man, who was asleep upstairs.

The victim was taken to the emergency room at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center. Damage to the property is estimated at $45,000. The American Red Cross of the Heartland assisted in finding the residents lodging for the night.

Willis is a Bloomington, IL, native. During his senior year at Bloomington High School, he finished third in the "Radio Speaking" division of the state speech contest, the only year he competed.
