Bloomington Working Toward Development, Recycling Efforts

City of Bloomington

Waste collected in Bloomington will need a new destination in the near future.State regulators expect the McLean County landfill to run out of space next year.

Ecology Action Center Director Michael Brown said Bloomington and Normal contract with Republic Disposal for waste hauling.

"Republic Services actually also runs the Livingston County landfill in Pontiac," said Brown. "So even as it is right now, some of our waste may be going over there from time to time. In the absence of anything else happening, our waste will just transition over to Livingston County landfill."

Additionally, the Bloomington City Council has taken the next step toward a tax increment financing district by approving creation of a formal plan for a TIF. The potential TIF district would stretch from North Main Street to Chestnut Street.

TIF comes from the increase in property value after new development happens. Council Member Amelia Buragas said she believes such a district will help spark development without spending existing tax dollars.

"It is generally considered safer and a more conservative approach to support economic development through rebates of future tax dollars," said Buragas. "Or through use of TIF funds."

The draft of the plan will go to the Council in January.
