Bloomington Police say one person has been taken into custody following a report of a possible armed subject east of downtown on Tuesday afternoon.

BPD posted a message on social media asking the public to avoid the 800 block of East Washington Street.

Police said District 87 officials were notified of the situation. Washington Elementary School is four blocks to the east. District 87 officials said students and staff were kept inside the building for about an hour until police notified them they were safe to leave.

Students are being dismissed at their usual time.

Police said they heard reports of gunfire in the area but have not been able to confirm those reports.

BPD provided an update on social media at 3:45 p.m. saying the area was now safe and the situation has been resolved. The department hasn't provided additional details.

WGLT will update this story.
