BPD Registering Citizen Security Cameras

Bloomington Police Dept.

The Bloomington Police Department is launching a private security camera registry as a tool in helping hinder crime and increase public safety.

Citizens and business owners will be able to register their privates cameras, making it easier for the police department to find, and perhaps use, the video footage to help solve crimes.

Officer Sara Mayer of the Bloomington Police Department says no one is being forced to register.

"This a voluntary program. No one is forced to register," Mayer said. "So far, we've had a lot of success with several crimes, where we've had individuals or businesses who've had private security cameras helped us solve crimes.

Mayer says the police must request the camera footage in order to obtain it. Citizens and business owners can visit the police department's website and click on "Security Camera Registration" to register their cameras and learn more about the new program.

Willis is a Bloomington, IL, native. During his senior year at Bloomington High School, he finished third in the "Radio Speaking" division of the state speech contest, the only year he competed.
