Bradley Doles Out Discipline For Quarantine Violations

Bradley University is making good on its promise to step up disciplinary enforcement to control the spread of COVID-19 on campus.

One week into a mandatory two-week all-student quarantine, Bradley University President Steve Standifird said the university has issued 10 written warnings and 11 $250 fines. There are three students who may be banned from campus, and one who faces suspension for the remainder of the academic year.

Standifird said the violations leading to discipline include a lack of physical distancing, violating mask-wearing rules, leaving campus for non-essential reasons like visiting bars, and having guests in their residences.

"Your behaviors collectively determine whether or not we are able to successfully control the spread of the virus and complete the semester on campus," Standifird said in a video message. "We can get through this if we collectively support each other in doing so."

Standifird said it will take a collective effort to return to in-class instruction next week and remain on campus through Thanksgiving, as originally planned.

The Peoria City/County Health Department also is closely watching the ongoing COVID-19 situation at Bradley.

There have been more than 250 positive COVID-19 tests at Bradley University since the semester began Aug. 24. The two-week quarantine, which runs through Sept. 23, is an attempt to "reset" and re-establish behaviors to mitigate the virus' spread outside the classroom setting.
