Bloomington Police Chief Brendan Heffner's last day on the job will be Friday.

Heffner was recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate to become the new U.S. Marshal for the Central District of Illinois. The U.S. Marshals are responsible for security at federal courthouses, for those in federal custody, and fugitive task forces, among other duties.

Heffner has served as Bloomington's chief since 2013. He retired from the Illinois State Police as a lieutenant colonel in 2010. The Illinois State University graduate began his career as a Normal Police officer in the mid-1980s.

A retirement reception is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. Friday at BPD's Osborn Room.
