A child has died after a shooting deemed accidental in Peoria's East Bluff neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded to the 2300 block of N. Maryland just after 4 p.m. on a report of a child possibly shot in the chest with a BB gun who was struggling to breathe.

Officers arriving on scene found the boy, who is between ages 8 and 9, suffered an actual gunshot wound to the chest.

Police spokeswoman Amy Dotson said officers determined the shooting happened within a home on N. Maryland. Detectives said the shooting was caused by children handling a gun.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.
