Cities Brace For Major Flooding Along Illinois River

The Illinois River is expected to hit major flood stage in Peoria by Friday morning. Cities aren't waiting until then to start preparing.

Sandbagging around the River Station began in Peoria earlier this week.Water Street was closed to vehicles from Hamilton to Main on Thursday evening as the waters begin to encroach past the railroad tracks which run along the riverfront.

The river is currently expected to crest at 28 feet.

Sidewalks remain open to foot traffic. The Peoria RiverFront Market will be hosted in the Caterpillar parking lot in the 100 block of Hamilton this weekend instead of its usual spot next to Martini's.

Across the river in East Peoria, officials are monitoring the situation and the condition of the Farm Creek levee. Evacuations are not recommended at this time for those living in low-lying areas, but the city advises people living in the Richland Farms neighborhood or those along Main Street to have a plan and provisions prepared.
