One Central Illinois company wants to make it easier for schools to recycle food waste.
Better Earth Logistics is rolling out a new composting program for schools in Peoria and Tazewell counties. Co-founder Luke Rosenbohm said he wants to teach future generations how to cut down on wasted food.
“If you look at what schools actually throw away, there’s not much they couldn’t actually recycle or re-use. So if we can get these schools closer to zero waste, that’s just showing this next generation being raised that, hey, this is possible, because essentially this is going to be their problem to fix," he said, noting that the state of the environment will only become a bigger issue going forward.
Rosenbohm says his company can help recycle all organic waste, including meat, fruit and vegetables. Better Earth Logistics then makes compost that can be used for gardening, landscaping, or construction projects.
He said Hollis Grade School has already successfully piloted a composting project, and now he wants to expand it to other schools.
“What we would like to do is get all the schools in Central Illinois on board with composting. That way these kids are learning exactly the process, there’s science behind it, and there’s a chance to teach them to do it the right way," Rosenbohm said.
School administrators can learn more Tuesday at a meeting at the Peoria City/County Health Department, 2116 N. Sheridan Rd., from 2-3 p.m.
