The Catholic Diocese of Peoria is preparing for the beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen after a miracle was attributed to him.
Pope Francis attributed the revival of an infant whose heart started beating again after 61 minutes without a pulse to the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen. The event happened at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria in 2010.
Late last month, Sheen's remains were transferred from St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City to St. Mary's in Peoria after a lengthy court battle ended in Peoria's favor.
“It is truly amazing how God continues to work miracles. I am so grateful that the Vatican acted so quickly after last week’s transfer of Sheen’s remains from New York to the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria," said Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria in prepared remarks.
The Catholic Diocese of Peoria is now beginning plans for Sheen's beatification.
Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, Prefect for the Congregation of the Causes of Saints, would come to Peoria to preside over the ceremony. A date hasn't yet been announced, but Jenky said updates will be made at this website.
Sheen was born in the Woodford County city of El Paso. He was ordained as a priest in Peoria in 1919, and later went on to become a prolific author of religious books and an early televangelist on radio and television.
