After a short discussion, the East Peoria City Council approved an application for a $400,000 state grant to make a splash pad at Levee Park a reality.
The East Peoria Community Foundation has already saved up $400,000 towards transforming the grassy lot adjacent to the East Peoria City Hall into a community park.
A matching grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources would pay for the splash pad, fountains and restrooms for the park.
If this grant and another state grant are approved, city officials say construction on the new park can start next year.
Council members approved the IDNR application during a special council meeting on Thursday morning.
East Peoria has been without any kind of aquatic recreational activities since Splashdown Water Park closed after the 2017 season.
