A former Bloomington man who scammed an elderly woman of more than $500,000 faces 6 ½ years in prison.
U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm has sentenced Timothy Herman, currently of Mesa, Arizona, and ordered him to pay $509,000 in restitution.
The judge convicted Herman in March of engaging in a fraud scheme from 2013 to 2017 and of lying to federal agents.
Prosecutors said Herman befriended the Peoria woman through her church and offered her an investment opportunity. He took her money and used it to make mortgage payments on his home, which was on the verge of foreclosure, and pay for bank loans and cruises, according to prosecutors.
Herman also embezzled money from a Minneapolis marking company which waived $149,000 in restitution. Prosecutors said Herman was managing a rewards program for a waste hauler in Arizona through his company Delta Direct.
