Fire Damages Home, Garage In Normal

The fire broke out around 7:35 p.m. Wednesday at 25 Ethell Parkway, Normal.

A Normal home and its garage were damaged Wednesday night in a fire. There were no injuries.

The fire broke out around 7:35 p.m. at 25 Ethell Parkway, near Towanda and Vernon avenues. Someone spotted smoke coming from a bathroom cabinet, revealing a larger inferno in the garage, fire officials said.

The fire was concentrated in the garage. The home itself sustained moderate smoke and water damage.

“It’s fortunate that the family was home, and that this occurred when they were awake,” Normal Fire Department spokesperson Matt Swaney said in a statement. “Their ability to call us quickly made a big difference in firefighters being able to stop this fire before it involved more of the home. In the middle of the night, this fire would have had a greater head start and would be burning directly under them as they slept.”

Firefighters cleared the scene at around 9:30 p.m. The displaced residents have found somewhere else to stay temporarily.

The home is insured. A full damage estimate was not available late Monday.
