The Peoria Fire Department is investigating a major fire Thursday evening at the OSF Cardiovascular Institute.

Firefighters responded to the medical complex, 5405 N. Knoxville Ave., just after 5 p.m. on a report of a mulch fire beside the building. The fire spread to an outside wall by the time firefighters arrived on the scene.

An attack hose line was pulled into the building while firefighters evacuated the employees and patients still in the building. Between 20 and 30 people were evacuated from the complex.

Heavy smoke was ventilated from a stairwell adjacent to the exterior wall fire. The fire was extinguished around 6:20 p.m.

No employees or patients were injured in the fire. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Damages are estimated at $300,000. A Peoria Fire Department investigator is working to ascertain the cause of the fire.
