The Peoria Public Library will host an expert on Illinois-Missouri French Creole history over the weekend.
Dennis Stroughmatt, a native of southeastern Illinois, is one of only about 20 known people left to speak a specific dialect of French Creole once widely spoken in what is now Illinois.
Stroughmatt's performance folktales and fiddle tunes are meant to inspire Illinoisans to take an interest in the region's history.
"Illinois French is no more a foreign language than Illinois English," Stroughmatt said. "So if you want to learn, come on [out]. We'll have some fun with it."
Stroughmatt's performance is this Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Peoria Public Library North Branch.
