UPDATE: Fulton County Deputy Killed in Armed Standoff

Project Blue Light Illinois

A Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy is dead after he was shot in an armed standoff near Avon on Tuesday afternoon.

The Illinois State Police said law enforcement responded to a battery and disturbance incident around 2 p.m. Deputy Troy Chisum, 39, was fatally shot while responding to the incident.

Chisum was a four and a half year veteran of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office.

"On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum," said Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard. "Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered."

“This tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the danger our law enforcement officers face as they work to keep our communities safe. I send my deepest condolences to the family of the Fulton County Sheriff’s deputy whose life was taken far too soon," said U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline). As the wife of a sheriff, my heart aches to hear about these senseless acts of violence. I join the community and families across Illinois as we mourn this loss – Deputy Chisum was a hero and we must never forget his sacrifice.”

Tributes poured in from all over the state on social media Tuesday night.

As of 9 p.m., the suspect is still barricaded in a building in rural Avon. Police departments from several counties are on scene. The Illinois State Police is leading the response.
