The city of Galesburg is bumping a police captain up into the chief's office.

Capt. Russell Idle of the Galesburg Police Department will be the new chief of police. He starts Sept. 9.

Idle replaces David Christensen, who retired in May after 13 years in the top role at the police department.

Idle is a 25-year veteran of the Galesburg Police Department. He was born in Evanston, and holds a degree from Western Illinois University. He also attended the Northwestern School of Police Staff and will attend the FBI Academy in October.

“I’m very honored to have been chosen to fulfill this role,” said Idle in prepared remarks. “I’ve had the privilege to learn from great leaders within the Police Department and I’m looking forward to utilizing that knowledge to lead the department and continue to serve the Galesburg community as Police Chief.”

The hiring process included a selection committee, the Galesburg City Council, and members of the community.
