The second-ranking Democrat in the U.S. Senate will host a town hall in Bloomington on Friday and GLT will broadcast the event live.
Assistant Minority Leader Dick Durbin will host the event 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 24, at Westbrook Auditorium in Presser Hall at Illinois Wesleyan University, at 1210 Park St.
Advanced sign-up opportunities were made available Wednesday afternoon. By 8 p.m., all tickets were distributed. Doors will open at 4:45 p.m., with any remaining seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. No signs will be permitted inside.
The event is set for the day after the Republican version of Obamacare—the American Health Care Act—is scheduled for a House vote. GOP leaders remain scrambling for support and beltway observers speculated the vote could be postponed or canceled.
GLT will set up stage side in the auditorium with GLT's Charlie Schlenker anchoring coverage. The town hall is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. In addition to the live broadcast Friday, GLT will re-broadcast a portion of the town hall Monday during Sound Ideas at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Durbin was in Washington on Wednesday as Senate Judiciary committee hearings into the nomination of Neil Gorsuch as U. S. Supreme Court Justice wrapped up. Durbin is expected to be in central Illinois Friday and will arrive in Bloomington shortly before the 5:30 start of the town hall.
The event comes as calls continue for central Illinois Republican U.S. representatives Darin LaHood and Rodney Davis to hold town hall meetings open to the general public.
