Heartland Community College in Normal is marking a quarter century of existence this week. Heartland is one of those entities which proves the public is not always right. After years of voters rejecting the idea, the state finally mandated heartland’s creation as the last community college district in the state. Since then it has grown…explosively. In this conversation with Charlie Schlenker, College President Rob Widmer talks about why the public got it so wrong?

Heartland Community College President Rob Widmer says his institution will not change its mission focused on students and their diverse needs to help them achieve their goals. Widmer says the college will remain a community resource responsive to community needs and try to retain flexibility as the student body changes over the next quarter century.

WGLT Senior Reporter Charlie Schlenker has spent more than three award-winning decades in radio. He lives in Normal with his family.
