Heartland Community College is moving men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball to the spring due to COVID-19.

Heartland Community College will have to wait longer for its first volleyball season to begin.
The National Junior College Athletic Association has pushed most of its fall sports to the spring due to COVID-19.

That impacts Heartland’s women's volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer programs.

“We knew as we approached the 2020-2021 academic year that our sports calendar might be a moving target,” Heartland Athletics Director Ryan Knox said in a news release. “Any chance to play competitive college sports is one we won’t take for granted. It requires patience, but we will do whatever is within our power to ensure a safe environment following all CDC, state of Illinois and IDPH guidelines.”

Heartland’s other fall sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, are unaffected by the NJCAA changes. They are scheduled to begin practice Aug. 1 and being competition Aug. 20. Men’s golf will begin competition in September, while baseball and softball will begin practice that month in preparation for spring competition.

The baseball and softball seasons were cut short in March due to the pandemic.

Heartland added women’s volleyball, men’s golf and men’s and women’s cross country to begin during the 2020-21 academic year.
