University High School students play "League of Legends."

Illinois State University is adding a video gaming program.

The esports program under the Campus Recreation department will have a competitive varsity program and several club teams. ISU will be the first public college or university in the state to offer varsity competitive video gaming.

Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington began offering such a program more than a year ago. University High School in Normal has also fielded a team.

Illinois State has 12 competitive esports teams that use a facility in Julian Hall. A new and larger space will be built in the Bowling and Billiards Center. "League of Legends" and "Overwatch" are just two of the games the teams play.
