In spite of divisions in the Republican Party over the Presidential candidacy of Donald Trump, an ISU Professor of Politics and Government said he doesn't foresee a splintered party. Tom McClure said during GLT's Sound Ideas the short term is secure.
"I think the party is going to stay together for this election," said McClure. "If Trump does not win, maybe you're going to see something after that."
Political conventions are a big show for any party that stages one. McClure said the theme of the Republican convention is segmented each day: Keep America Safe, Make America Work, Make America First, and Make America One. McClure said the daily themes appeal to the base.
"It's all moving toward unification and I think they're trying to get people to buy into common core values," said McClure. "If they can see the candidate shares those values they will adopt the candidate as one of theirs."
McClure said choosing Indiana Governor Mike Pence as Donald Trump's running mate helps with the conservative faithful.
McClure said he doubts there will be a massive makeover to Trump's style. He says that could alienate his original supporters.
McClure is with a group of ISU students at the convention and will be checking in with GLT all week.
