ISU Prof: Sanders In Until Convention

YouTube

Expect Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders to attend this summer's Democratic convention as a candidate. That's according to Illinois State University Assistant Professor of Politics and Government Kerri Milita.

During GLT's Sound Ideas, Milita said Sanders' path to the nomination is closing fast, but he'll continue to pursue the nomination throughout the process.

"Mathematically and in all probability he's not going to win the nomination," said Milita. "But with him it's always been about the message. It's been amount mobilizing people that had previously been marginalized from the political process."

Milita still expects the math to be a problem for Republican front-runner Donald Trump. She said it is becoming more difficult for GOP contenders to catch him. "Had (Ohio Governor John) Kasich not won Ohio, Trump would be on his way to winning the nomination," said Milita.

She said Texas Senator Ted Cruz's victory in McLean County came because of vigorous late campaigning in central Illinois, with appearances in Peoria and Decatur. She said these appear to have "trumped" Trump's high-profile Bloomington rally on Sunday.

Kerri Milita is part of a panel discussion titled “Explaining the Trump Candidacy: What Does the Republican Primary Tells Us?”  It begins at 6:30 Thursday evening in Schroeder Hall, room 242 on the ISU campus. Other participants include Politics and Government assistant professors Carl Palmer and L. J. Zigerell. The panel will be moderated by Assistant Professor Meghan Leonard. The presentation is free and open to public.
