A couple is making one of the largest donations in Bradley University's history.

The Dr. Earl and Lovie Beard Trust will donate $1 million a year in perpetuity to the university to bolster science scholarships and curriculum.

Earl Beard is a 1945 Bradley University graduate. He was a pioneer in cardiac catheterization...and established an occupational medicine contract with NASA in the 1960s. Lovie Beard was a surgical nurse with the Air Force and a champion tennis player.

Dr. Christopher Jones, dean of Bradley's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said the donation will help bring science education into reach for students for years to come.

A university spokesperson said the trust is set up to spend interest, never the principal. This allows for the perpetual funding.
