Man Whose Gun Allegedly Misfired Indicted On Attempted Murder Charge

A McLean County grand jury indicted a Latham man Wednesday on an attempted murder charge connected to an incident in Normal.

Police arrested Walter Sweeney, 31, on Dec. 20. He has been held since then for prosecutor review of charges.

Officers in Normal say Sweeney had a hammer in one hand and a gun in the other in the 1500 block of North Main Street. During a confrontation, Sweeney allegedly pointed the gun at a person in a car and pulled the trigger. The weapon allegedly misfired.

A judge has now set bond for Sweeney at $50,000.

Charges filed at the time included attempted aggravated discharge of a firearm/occupied vehicle and aggravated battery/public place.
