Florence Fifer Bohrer of Bloomington was the first woman to serve in the Illinois State Senate, serving from 1925 to 1933. This undated photo shows her in her Senate office.

In the decade after women's suffrage, leaders of the female empowerment movement were eager to become more involved in governmental affairs.
