A fourth person has died in McLean County after contracting COVID-19, as public health officials announced nine more local cases on Thursday.

McLean County's total number of confirmed cases now stands at 136. That includes 31 active cases (25 people isolated at home, six hospitalized) -- the highest number of active cases since mid-April, according to data from the McLean County Health Department. It comes after a recent outbreak at a Bloomington nursing home and another among Illinois State University students who attended an off-campus gathering.

Of the nine new cases:

  • Five men: One in his 80s; one in his 70s; two in his 60s; and one in his 20s.
  • Four women: One in her 70s; one in her 60s; one in her 50s; and one in her 40s.

The increase in cases comes as local testing ramps up. The Bloomington drive-thru site has been busier since loosening criteria April 29 to include more asymptomatic people. It's now testing about 142 people per day on average, up from 97 people per day before the criteria changed. It hit the 250-test daily capacity both Tuesday and Wednesday.
The testing site at the Interstate Center on Bloomington's west side remains open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through May 22.
